I am not a musical person. I cannot hold a tune. I'm so tone-deaf that I don't even realize how apparently horrible I sound when I sing. (And I do love to sing, especially to my beloved BNL cds, much to lovely hubby's chagrin.) So, it has been a pleasant surprise to find that music is becoming a treasure to the toddler. She has been babbling since she was a few weeks old, and as she got older, the babbling became musical. At 15 months, she was singing the refrain for several kids' songs. "EIEIO" was heard a million times a day, approximately. "Twinkle, twinkle in the sky" gets repeated over and over and over and over. Tonight she surprised me, though, by singing almost an entire verse of a song we like to herself as she played in the bath.
We have an immense collection of kids' books, amassed during my 10 year preschool teaching gig. I have this fantastic book of funny songs with ridiculous lyrics sung to familiar tunes, take me out of the bathtub and other silly dilly songs, by Alan Katz. One of my favorite songs from this book is called "Brother Mitch." You sing it to the tune of "London Bridge," and the lyrics are:
Brother Mitch keeps falling down
Throughout town
He's a clown
When he falls he wears a frown
Tie his laces!
Double knots will tie them tight
He falls left
He falls right
He's a walking bandage sight
Tie his laces!
Tie them twenty times and then
Not again!
They're open!
Think I got a better plan
Buy him Velcro!
Without further ado, here is my funny little redhead singing her rendition. (Side note: Please excuse the setting... yes, she's sitting on the potty. Getting this video of the entire song took five separate attempts as she kept yelling about something in between verses in our first tries in the tub, but then she suddenly needed to sit on the potty. But I persevered and kept trying to get her to sing it... I think I'll make a good stage mother some day. Also excuse the baby's squeals in the background... he's still lying in the tub during the potty break/singing performance and wanting some attention, too!)
