now posting regularly

It's been a while, but here's something that I heard this morning on NPR that just had to post. I've mentioned before about my dear hair stylist who I can no longer afford, with somewhat dire results, but I do remember one piece of advice that he's given to me time and time again that I've always scoffed at. He told me that I shampoo too often. Uh, what? Once a day is too often? I tried to follow his advice, because he is a hair genius- at times he's made me feel good about myself even when I was still looking nine months pregnant while toting around a six month old. So, I switched to shampooing every other day, but still using a very small amount of conditioner each morning. Yeah, I don't like my hair when it's not squeaky clean. Call me crazy, but it just isn't right. I don't feel like I've woken up completely until I've showered and shampooed and at least soaped down my bits and pieces. I tossed dear Marcus' advice to the curb, and went back to my frequent shampooer status.

Then I heard this story on NPR this morning, and while I never really questioned the validity of the advice, but I'm wondering if I didn't give it a good enough try the first time around. What do you think? What's your shampooing routine? Anyone else have thin, stringy hair like me and is more than a little cautious of giving up her once-a-day habit??

Probably using more than my fair share of hair products,

  1. I'm down to shampooing every other day or sometimes every third day. It is seeming to help. And once every other week, I use a deep cleansing thing.

I also try to use minimal styling product which seems to help avoid icks. Good luck!

  2. Eek! Fine hair + conditioner = LIMP. Yes, you can condition if you wash, but on days when you aren't washing, don't do ANYthing. I don't even wet my hair on days that I don't wash. If your hair needs a boost, try a round brush and a hairdryer on dry hair on the non-wash days.

I skip every other day or so (my favorite hairsylist yells at me if I wash daily, too). Sometimes if it looks ok, I'll even skip an extra day.

Oh, and one advantage to less washing? Color lasts longer!

  3. Ok, didn't clink on links because I'm just TOO busy (watching 30 Rock) but I have annoyingly fine hair and I MUST do something daily. I remember once having a couple of consecutive good hair days and discovering that I'd accidentally been conditioning rather than shampooing. But that was short lived. Aussie Moist works well for me. Many other products leave my hair flat and gross and yucky feeling.

  4. Seriously, I have fine hair, but a lot of it. I never shampoo every day, nor do I condition every day. Every other. Worst case, I'll wet down sections of it to re-dry, or iron, but NEVER even wet my hair down. I always have at LEAST one kind of thickener in it, too, if not hairspray, too.

The only exception - when I have a pixie cut or other short hair, there isn't much I can just wet down, and there's a lot more product, so I do wash every day then.

  5. I have straight, fine hair, and I have to wash it every day. HAVE TO. I have tried to skip days before, but I just feel gross. I guess my hair will just have to be an unhealthy clean.

  6. Having been advised by the same fabulous hair stylist, I wash my hair every other day as well (mainly to hold my color longer).

I do have a beauty tip/solution (hopefully). Oscar Blandi makes what is called the Pronto Dry Shampoo--no water necessary. It comes in a spray and a what I think is a powder form (ranging in price from $11-$21). You can pick it up at Sephora. I have never tried it, but I read some of the consumer comments---for the most part they were positive.

If I'm near a Sephora anytime soon, I will buy the spray and report back. :-)

  7. I don't wash my long, curly hair every day. I like it to be straight and volume-free.

  8. well, I've done the baking soda and vinegar hair care and I liked it. There's a bit of an adjustment and you're supposed to brush better to distribute oils (not vigourous, but stimulate the scalp). I put some essential oils in the vinegar rinse but there really is no residual smell after your hair dries. And the BS wash really works, removes dirt and odor. I read about it on a mothering.com forum.

My hair is thin and at the time a short/medium-ish length. My main problem is that I always have a dry dandruff-y scalp no matter what product I use. Lately I've been using a tee tree shampoo and herbal conditioner. It's okay. But I'm thinking of trying the BS+V regimen. I just wish I could figure out the dry scalp thing.

on the same line, I LOVED my baking soda and honey face wash. squeeze a quarter sized amount of honey on your palm and sprinkle an equal amnt of BS. rub together in your palms and then all over your wet face. very gentle yet effective. rinses right off.

  9. I wash my hair every other day. I can get away with one day more if I wear my hair in a ponytail on that last day. my hair person told me that, so i follow.
