happy dirt day!

Okay, so a synonym doesn't really work there, huh? How about Happy Earth Day, instead? I'm still not fully clear why talking about environmentalism has become politicized, but that's a topic for another post. Instead, I just wanted to share two of my current faves when it comes to talking about being green with my kids. First up, it's certainly not new anymore, but this entire CD is one of my family's top picks. And in honor of Earth Day, let's talk a little about those three R's:

(Gotta love those girls on the right who couldn't care less about the cutie Jack Johnson sitting next to them, but are infatuated with the dog instead!)

And then there's this adorable and just-right-for-preschooler's book, 10 Things I Can Do To Help My World by Melanie Walsh. With simple drawings and bright colors, the illustrations are accessible and familiar to young children. The suggested actions are just as understandable to preschoolers as the pictures, as well. Reading it with Red today, it was clear that she could make the connections between the book and the very same actions that we take in our everyday life. (Thanks to lovely hubby, we have power cut-off switches, that even the two-year-old knows we need to turn off when we're done watching TV! No electricity being used by our entertainment system when we're not watching!)

It certainly can't hurt to lay the foundation of thoughtfulness about how our actions affect the environment at a young age, right? We all gotta do our parts, even the little ones among us!

Watching the spring rain turn to hail turn to sunshine on this wacky-weathered Earth Day,

  1. My 6 year old son came home from kindergarten so excited about saving the Earth. Thanks for the book recommendation. I will check it out for my kids. It will be a great tool to help kids want to be "green".

  3. Power cut off switch? Do share...

And ummm today Mister Man asked me if I recycle various items... when he got to banana peels, I explained that I wanted to start composting, and he's SOOO into it. I think I may now have my justification :)
