the king has hit a new low

I'm a fan of creative commercials, and I admit that I even get a kick out of the more, ahem, racier ones that I've seen. BUT. You gotta know where to draw the line there, commercial writers. Who in heaven's name thought of the new Burger King ad, and who in the world Ok'd it? If you're not sure what I mean, it's the one that uses Sir Mix-a-Lot's old song Baby Got Back, and has the apparently good-idea-to-someone to combine it with SpongeBob and a bunch of chicks with phone-book-shaped behinds to promote KIDS' MEALS! Yeah, there's no arguing the overt sexualization that is the foundation of this commercial. I'd post it here, but I don't even want that crap content on my blog.

But thankfully, an AWESOME organization, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, has issued a press release and an opportunity for people like me who are incensed at this gar-BAGE to voice our opinions. (The press release includes a video of the ad, if you haven't seen it yet.) Sure, my family doesn't happen to eat fast food, so it's not like this company is losing any money from me, but on that rare occasion that I might want to grab a cheeseburger, you can be damn sure that it won't be from the BK. And yeah, any economic effect that might result from spreading the word about this awful commercial might be slim to none, but it seems like the right thing to do, you know? Is it too much to ask of you also to give that giant-headed King the old heave-ho? Honestly, who sat at a giant desk in some corporate office screening this ad and saw dollar signs? Shame on everyone involved.

Firmly planted on my soapbox,

  3. Wow, that is just SO WRONG! I'm glad my kids don't watch commercial TV. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

  4. Thanks for the link; I'm happy to check that out. We just saw that ad on TV the other day and my husband and I both commented on how disgusting it is. That King character is really creepy, too.

And now my kid wants to go there.

  6. Yeah, that is horrible. NOT for kids, please. SHEESH! They could have done it more tastefully--but even so, NOT for kids! I don't actually like my kids to SAY butt, and must we seriously ever sing this song again?
