the kids are picking away

It's that time again, folks, 5 Minutes for Books' monthly carnival, Kids' Picks. Today is the day that I am guaranteed an easy blog post-- all I have to do is share the top two faves-of-the-moment for the kids, the ones that we're reading over and over, the books that I can recommend to other moms and kids for your next library trip!

First up, let's take a look at a few books that are keeping Pudge company these days. Okay, so I have to admit that we actually just picked these up at the library yesterday, but in the course of less than 24 hours, we've already read them at least 10 times! Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, illustrated by Sylvia Long, uses several verses of everyone's favorite childhood song, with adorable pictures of animals preparing for bed. Pudge has actually been singing this song for the last week or so, so I was thrilled to see this book on the board book shelf at the library! Another that we picked up was No No Yes Yes by Leslie Patricelli, and let me just say that there is no other board book out there as perfect as this one for my little mischievous boy. Using these phrases on alternating pages, the illustrations show a diaper-clad baby in situations that elicit "No No!" and "Yes Yes!" from loving parents.

Onto Red. For her birthday, she received these two books by Anna Dewdney, and she and I have been enjoying these books so very much. Llama Llama Red Pajama tells the story of little Llama Llama who just wants his mama at bedtime, told from the perspective of this young child in a llama's body. In Llama Llama Mad at Mama, we're once again looking at the world through Llama Llama's eyes, only this time we're being dragged along on a major shopping trip. You know, every kids' favorite activity, right? The absolute beauty of this book is the dead-on representations of a young child's experience-- a good reminder to us grown-ups who might not always get it.

And last, but by no means least, comes some recent reads from JAM. He discovered these two at his school library, and I did not believe that the name Dave Barry on the cover was the same Dave Barry that I adore myself. Lo and behold, Dave Barry apparently has teamed up several times with Ridley Pearson to write these Peter Pan inspired stories. First, he read Peter and the Starcatchers quickly followed by (as in, the next day!), Peter and the Shadow Thieves. I haven't read them myself, but JAM sure does enjoy them, and I like that he's branching out to new books and genres!

That's what we've been reading these days-- how about you? Link on up over at 5M4B!

Sharing the book love,

  1. I have a nephew that has the Llama book memorized! (I think there is a third book in that series now, actually, but haven't read it myself yet). :) Fun books. :)

  2. Great picks! I think my youngest would like those first two books. His favorite word is No! We have read one of the llama books, but I need to find the other one. Thanks for the ideas!

  3. Oh we love the Llama Llama books! They're so much fun -- and sold out Llama Llama Mad at Mama at the book fair :)

And really? Peter Pan based books? Do you think a 5 1/2 year old would be ok reading them or are they too intense? We have a MAJOR crush on Peter Pan around here. And the Magic Treehouse books... well, we only have five left, which is about another four or five days :(

  4. Ah yes, the "Read it again!" syndrome.

When I'm shelving books at Amanda's library, I see those Dave Barry books, too and they make me chuckle.
