The latest book to pop to the top of the reviewing pile is The Disappearance of Irene Dos Santos, and it's just so unique that I'm compelled to keep reading any chance I get. I'm not yet ready to review it, seeing as I haven't finished it and all, but it's definitely fitting the bill, as I understand it, of Latin American fiction that revolves around the whole magical realism idea. With different voices telling pieces of the story, a fair share of dream sequences and religious/idolatry beliefs, so far, it's very cool.
And then there's the other one. Oh, I could go on and on and sound like a ridiculous, blubbery fool, but I'm rereading my MOST FAVORITE BOOK EVER. Yes, I just used bolded all caps there, that's how infatuated I am with this book. I've never, ever been as affected by a novel as I am by The Time Traveler's Wife. I've been bugging lovely hubby to read this book for about five years now, ever since I devoured it when it came out. As I flew through the final pages very soon after beginning the book, I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Seriously. Uncontrollable, heaving, snot-dripping-out-my-nose crying. I freaked out a four-year-old JAM, but I honestly just couldn't stop. I cried for about an hour after I finished reading, because I just couldn't get out of the story.
So, now that I've sufficiently portrayed myself as craaaaaaaazyyyyyy, I guess my point is this. To be totally and completely enraptured with a written story is one helluva experience. To be transported to another world, into the mind and feelings and soul of a character... how incredible is that, huh? Lovely hubby is nearing the end of TTTW, and since he's been bringing it with him to work to read during lunch, I'm a pitiful 250+ pages behind him. He may soon be shedding a few tears as he reaches the end, because you have to have a heart made of stone not to. A movie version of the book has been made and has been in a unbelievably long post-production delay for a while, but it's scheduled to be released on August 14th. Be prepared for a characteristic rant on the 15th.
Signing off to rebury my nose,
Ok...speaking of magical realism I am reading the newest book by the author of Hummingbird's Daughter (did you read that on the Nook?). Enjoying it so far.
ReplyDeleteAnd my husband is currently reading the Time Traveler's wife. It's been on my TBR list and my bookshelf forever. He picked it up and last week and keeps raving about it. Hope he finishes it while we are at the beach next week so I can finally read it.
I loved what you said about living in waves...I feel the same way. Currently not in huge reading phase, more consumed with moving but looking forward to being in a book phase while at the beach.
I haven't read The Time Traveler's Wife yet, but I want to before I see the movie. I watched the trailer and it looks so good. I am looking forward to your review of the other book, I haven't seen one yet. Happy reading (when you get a chance!)
ReplyDeleteI've never cried from a book. Ever. My BFF gave me one and told me if I didn't shed a tear I had no soul. I got mildly teary for half a second but that was it. Which is weird, because I cry at everything else in the world. I'm crying right now.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I adore that you "have to go the bathroom a lot". I've pulled that one far too many times. But then I lose track of time and people become worried about my colon when I've been in there for an hour. Little does anyone know, my pants are up and the lid is down. I'm just chillin'.
Ok, most rambling comment ever now finished.
I haven't read that one yet... but I've read two of Philippa Gregory's in the last week. And I'm trying to talk myself into waiting to go to the library tomorrow to get the FIRST book in the trilogy (I read the second accidentally -- this is what happens when you go to the library with children and rush), but so far I'm not covincing myself. I have heard such good things about The Time Traveler's Wife but I've not read it -- yet!
ReplyDeleteYou know I totally agree with you, especially on the last part. I am here at the beach with my family and I got so wrapped up in a book I stayed up until 1am. Not good when your kids are waking up at 5:30 with the sun :)
