what's going on?

Yes, I've been a bit scattered lately, and I feel like I've missed the 'important' posts of my life lately, so here's one of those mish-mash posts that I write in an effort to assuage my blogging guilt.

Apparently he has a little Dutch in him
Pudge got his dear long curls cut off in favor of a more gender-appropriate 'do (even with his very boyish toddler wardrobe, the "is it a boy or a girl" questions just kept on coming), and he now looks definitively like a boy. A boy who should have his finger stuck in a dam, but a boy nonetheless. I'm not digging the straight-line-across of hair on his forehead, but he's 1, so seriously, his hair isn't at the top of our list of things to attend to.

BEFORE (adorable curls totally fitting his personality)

AFTER (it's a good thing he's got a really cute face)

He totally ROCKED that scooter
To say that Lovely Hubby lives for basketball is beyond a major understatement. He has suffered more than his fair share of sprained ankles over the years, but he still goes back for more each and every week. Lately he had been back up to 4 mornings a week of games played before work, which meant sacrificing sleep for very active exercise-- a trade-off that only the very hardcore b-ball lovers can make. And then last Thursday happened. The link is to his direct retelling of the story, but the synopsis is that he has hurt his knee, enough that he needs a brace to stabilize it. He went for an MRI yesterday, and he's scheduled to go back to the doctor tomorrow to review the films and hopefully get as mild a prognosis as possible. But, that will most likely still mean it will be a couple of months before he can get back to his former and beloved basketball playing habit. I feel for him, because I know how much this means to him. (What if I couldn't read or blog for months?? Just take me out back now.) The one little upside to the ordeal, though, was a really cool trip through Costco, with hubby in the lead in one of those store scooters. Yeah, he's awesome.

you got a license for that thing, Mister?

9 + 4th = where has the time gone??
And my biggest blogging blunder was bypassing JAM's birthday with nary a tribute post in sight. Yes, JAM turned nine, (NINE!), in mid-August, and in his honor we all spent an afternoon at the pool consuming cheese curls, Doritos, pizza and soda along with six other 9 and 10 year olds, which was surprisingly a lot easier than I had imagined it would be. He hadn't had a 'friend birthday party' in a couple of years, so he was really due for one, and once again, I found myself expressing gratitude that he was a summer baby. I do believe that pool parties are the absolute best ever!

some serious beach ball bouncing going on

the kids' table

one cool dude

As for the 4th-- that's the grade that JAM started last week. Uh, excuse me?? I actually remember 4th grade- my teachers (we moved a few months in to the school year, and my first 4th grade teacher was A LOT cooler than my second one...), my friends, my life. How is it that he's already entered this stage of his life where he's a big kid, making his own decisions, and on top of it all, he'll actually remember this stuff later?? The first-week-back transition wasn't all that smooth, but this week has been significantly better, so hopefully we'll soon be back into the routine fully. I still can't believe that he's in 4th grade. I can't even be articulate about it, other than to sappily say that I remember when he was a baby, and now he's NINE! A full-blown, Star Wars-obsessed, wacky-sense-of-humor-possessing, handsome-as-all-out nine year old. Oh my.

nope, we can't forget about her
Yup, Red's still three. And prone to tantrums, screaming, and wreaking general havoc everywhere she goes. Oh yeah, and she's still pretty good at being cute, too.

Are we caught up yet? We had a summer full of fun mini-trips (which I didn't really blog about, but perhaps lovely hubby will get around to putting photos and posts up on his blog, which I can simply lazily link up to) and a lot of old-fashioned hanging out at the pool and playing in our neighborhood. Good times. With an actual chill in the air this week, I feel like I'm saying goodbye to summer as the door to fall is creaking open. This time of year always feels strangely more appropriate for the label "New Year's" than January to me, even though I haven't set up a classroom in three years now! Either way, it's refreshing to feel like it's time for a new start.

Feeling more caught up,

  1. Ha! That picture of hubby rocks. I remember how happy I was to ride in one of those at Walmart - just to be out of the HOUSE!!

  2. That scooter is hilarious! After I had my knee surgery (like maybe THE day after), my friend took Amanda and me to WalMart. I could not manage that on crutches, still totally bandaged up, so she pushed me in a wheelchair with 2 whining 4 year olds. We laughed SO hard.

And that shirt you are wearing in the "before" pick -- I may have one just like it (from Target?), and I may be wearing it right now.

  3. OMG! That picture of Hannah is beautiful! I love how you (or Scott) captured her expression with the water droplets.

The pool photos--you should have captioned yourself in the bottom corner with Red in the water and Pudge on your hip. :-) That was a fun afternoon. Since I was at Jam's first birthday, I can't believe he's 9 either! Man, am I old.

  4. Great catch-up on your family. I really hope our families can meet in real life one day.
