I know it's bad form to be blog-absent for an entire week. Too much stuff going on that isn't really blog-appropriate and a general funk has descended as a result. But, I'm using my weekly commitment to professing my love for everything NPR as the motivation to start clickety-clacking away on the keys. Here, in no particular order, are the winner stories from this week. (Okay, there's a little order... I saved the best for last, as they say.)
- "Colleges Turn From In-House E-mail To Free Gmail"-- Neat story about college email addresses disappearing in today's Google-run-world. Not something I can really relate to, seeing as when I went to a teeny, tiny private college, there were only 2 or 3 computers in the one computer lab on campus that actually had Internet access. Ha!
- "Natalie Merchant: Globe-Spanning Poetry"-- I loved Natalie Merchant back in the day, and the stories behind her new release are incredible. I may have to go out and purchase an actual CD!
- "The 'Brat Pack' Grows Up, But Doesn't Grow Old"-- Wanna feel old? Get this- The Breakfast Club came out 25 years ago. A quarter of a century ago. Old. (It's a neat piece, though, even though I felt the urge to rub Ben-Gay on my joints and take out my teeth while I read it.)
- "Essay - Is this seat taken?"-- I've never been to Poland, but I've ridden enough public transportation in my life that this story pulled me in immediately. The other segments of this show were really quite interesting as well, but this story starts at about the 44:00 mark.
- "Why The Animal Critic Gives The Panda An F"-- The Alpaca gets an F, too! Even with it's adorably cute and furry face! This one cracked me up, and it's sure to bring a giggle your way, too. C'mon- you know you're dying to hear it now.
- "We Eat The New KFC Double Down And Live To Tell About It (But It's Only Been 15 Minutes)"-- My adoration for NPR is increased by a bazillion times whenever I get to hear Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. Reading this conversation about a new KFC sandwich that is quite possibly capable of killing you in 30 minutes flat, was hilarious. Oh, how I've always wanted to be part of a funny group of people like this!
Gotta love quality radio entertainment,
I'll have to listen to that Natalie Merchant CD.
ReplyDeleteI was just listening to Wait Wait Don't Tell me yesterday. I podcast it, and it's a great way to get through little housekeeping chores. It doesn't require full attention (unlike This American Life, which I also podcast), and is so upbeat and chipper.
Also--I grinned at the thought of the "computer lab." I remember it well in college.
Really? No school email anymore? That was so cool to get to go into that building and get my very first email account. Of course, I couldn't come up with anything good. If only I could go back in time ;)
ReplyDeleteThe double down idea is just making me sick though.
And HOW did I not know you were on SV Moms? How did I miss that?
