nightstand notes

Technically, I don't keep my books on my nightstand, but my shelves have many books next in line. I'm really awful at keeping up with more than one book at a time, and I've been trying to do that for a while now, so we'll just say that's why the bookmark in Les Miserables has not moved all that much since last month. Ugh, let's not talk about that.

Instead, let's talk about what hopes I have for the next month's reading selections. Currently, I'm working through these:

If you've been here before, you've heard me rave about Teaching Your Child to Love Learning by Judy Harris Helm, Stacey Berg, and Pam Scranton. This one is all about doing project learning at home with your children, and my babes are having a blast with our Bird Project this spring! I've raved before about the benefits of a learning approach like this (click over to the bird project link to read more!), and I'm enjoying taking my preschool classroom experiences of the past and applying them to my life as stay-at-home-mom now. Big, big recommendations on this one.

My other current read is Old World Mother, New World Daughter: An Education in Love and Freedom by Maria Laurino. I'm only a bit into this one so far, and I have to say that nonfiction just reads so much slower for me than fictional pieces. I'm enjoying this one, but so far it's not exactly what I expected. The review will be posted on 5M4B, and it will be part of a fantastic giveaway, so keep your eyes open for that soon!

Then we have the ones waiting patiently for their turns with the bookmarks:
That should fill the days this month-- warmer weather means more time outside... with little breaks in the playing where Mommy likes sitting on her bench in the front yard with a book while little ones dig in the dirt to their hearts' content. Yay!

What are you reading these days? Feel free to chime in over at 5 Minutes for Books or check out other nightstand selections of our loyal readers!

Happy reading to all,

  5. I'm past the time when I could use Teaching Your Child to Love Learning for my own children, but it still looks like one that would be interesting!

  6. I am such an ADD reader -- LOTS going on at once (as my "in progress" list testifies -- and honestly, I think I have one or two in progress NOT on that list).

My husband laughs, because I'll sit down on the couch with 3 books and my reading notebook. I never know when the urge to switch tracks will happen.

  8. I need to read Les Miserable but I'm working my way through Ulysses right now-the Irish one. I read Les Miserables in French class, an assignment in high school but never in English. I'm just starting the The Household Guide and I have no idea what it's about yet, but it will be nice to have someone to compare notes with so to speak. Adorable children, I love the red hair. Thank you for visiting my blog and have a happy reading month.

  10. I want to read that book you're talking about... but I've got quite a few waiting for me :) I need to read Doing School by Marcia Clake Pope. I've heard great things about that one. Yet another book to make you think!

  11. The Old World Mother book sounds intriguing to me ... Hmmm, you're the 2nd one now reading Les Mis (or trying to). I take it the book is more challenging than the musical? (which I loved). Enjoyed reading your list!

  12. I know how it is with nonfiction. I have one book that is really good but I just don't make myself pick it up often enough to progress through it! Admission looks interesting; I'll have to check that one out.

I'm just now catching up with the WOYN posts and am actually doing a giveaway as part of mine. :)
