this week's guffaws

Unbelievable newsflash just came in on the wire-- okay, it's not really news since it's over 24 hours old by now-- but it's remarkable nonetheless. News like this comes along only once every few months, so it's worth taking note of when it hits the press.

I went out last night.

Yup, that's went out as in I left my house clad in clothing that was not a version of my Mommy Uniform of T-shirt and yoga pants, I had no children holding my hand or perched upon my hip, and I carried an actual purse. Oh yes, this is big news. The sad part of the equation is that lovely hubby was not holding my hand either, since he was the babysitter and our party consisted solely of estrogen-producers. Our ladies night out consisted of taking the Metro to DC, grabbing dinner at Gordon Biersch (where I had the pleasure of drinking my hands down favorite, Amaretto Sour, three times over), and then heading over to the Warner Theatre to sit and listen to the off-color, inappropriate and freaking hilarious stylings of my favorite singing comediaaaaaaannnnn*... Stephen Lynch, baby!

I could go on and on about how strange it felt to be out without the children, and stranger yet to be out with adults but not have my guy at my side. I could let you take a peek into the odd inner workings of my psyche and blather on about my thoughts of how I appeared through others' eyes, about how I'm always seen first and foremost as a mom, so I wondered how I was seen without my children. I could seriously write a ridiculous-lengthed essay on my own self-identification questions and ponderings.

I could do all those things, but would those make you giggle? Perhaps, depending on your view of me I guess, but I'm opting to go the comedy route anyway, not the introspective blah blah blah. So instead, I wish to share with you my favorite song from Lynchy's new album. Man, I love this guy-- he's funny, his singing voice is beautiful in a cherubic way that doesn't match the content of his songs, and he ain't too bad on the eyes, wink wink nudge nudge. But, that being said, before you click the little play arrow on the following video, I feel it's my obligation to let you know a few little things... let's just say that his stuff isn't for everybody:

1. He curses. A LOT. And not just the lighter fare of the swear word world. This particular song has what I would classify as a medium-ranked obscenity as a key word in the chorus. If you flat-out don't care for cursing, you should definitely take a pass on this one.

2. His material is often very off-color-- there's really no topic that he won't sing about. This song is more silly than offensive, other than the repeated word, in my opinion, and I even told my mom about the premise of the song and she was cracking up.

So, if you're still sticking around, let me tell you that "Fishin' Hole" is the song on the new album that made me laugh the loudest. This one nudges on to the list of my personal faves of all of his songs, and I think that if you know me, you'll know that it's the first verse that did me in the most! (Note: this is the album recording version of the song that somebody posted on youtube, so the video is just the one image of the CD cover. No getting to see his cuteness while performing...)

Oh my. I can't count how many times I've listened to this song in the last few days... and it still gets me every time. The title track comes in a close second as funniest on this CD, and you can listen to that one too, if you are so inclined. Alrighty, back to the G-rated guffaws next week!

Basking in the memory of last night,

*If you are already a Lynch fan, you should have heard a really high-pitched voice sing these words, right???

  1. First off, lucky you, getting a night out, big girl style. But I know what you mean, on so many different things.

Second? Stephen Lynch is a comedic genius. I would LOVE to see him live. Although I'd probably wet myself. Especially after 3 drinks.

  3. Yeah, I missed being there, but me and the crazies were happy you got to go out. Hanging out at Chez Y-S made it a lot easier to handle too. :)

Love ya, and make sure you don't wait another 5 months to go out again alright? Everyone's a lot happier when Mom get to hang loose for a while. Especially me ;)
