nightstand notes/ wanna view some reviews?

Oh, what a difference a month makes.  Last month, it was all I could do to get my nightstand post up a day late, what with our drowning-in-DIY lives.  This month sees me a bit more on time for Nightstand, living in a 97% finished home, and happy to say that we have returned to our regular school year lives!

Enough about the other life stuff, it's time to talk books.  I'm going to assume that my nightstand (aka bookshelf in the dining room) might have some things in common with a few, or a gazillion, other folks this week.  This afternoon will have me running to my front door to see if the stinking FedEx guy has come already!!  You know what I'm talking about, right?

MOCKINGJAY!!!

Yesterday I consumed The Hunger Games, and as of this morning, I'm halfway through Catching Fire as well.  I'm being reminded of the intensity that came close to overwhelming me the first time I read these books when they came out, and I'm finding multiple details or things mentioned in passing that I'm convinced will take on greater significance in the finale, Mockingjay.  Suzanne Collins- you are most definitely a popular lady today.

While Katniss and Gale and Peeta are swirling around in my head (oh, who's going to survive??  who's going to be loved??  the suspense is killing me!!!), there are, in fact, other books waiting to be read, too.  Here's a look at what's coming down the pike:

* Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie -- As you can see, this one got pushed back by other novels from last month, but it's definitely up next!

* The Twisted Path Home by Fae Bidgoli -- This book's description is quite intriguing- an Iranian woman living in the U.S. who begins to channel a woman from 1800's Persia through hypnosis.  This sounds like it will be a very emotional read.

* The Elephant's Journey by Jose Saramago and Margaret Jull Costa -- 1500's Europe is the setting for this one that has been described as funny and imaginative.  I'm looking forward to this book that is a it out of my comfort zone!

* It Started With a Dare by Lindsay Faith Rech -- A YA book that I'm going to give a try... again, not my typical reading fare, but we shall see.

* A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park -- I'm very much looking forward to reading this middle grade novel with JAM, and I expect it will be a great one to discuss.

* The Slippery Year: A Meditation on Living Happily Ever After by Melanie Gideon -- A friend loaned me this book, saying that she thinks it really resonate with me.  Hmmm... I'm definitely curious!

This should all make for a very eclectic reading month!  Now, if you're immersed in the world of The Hunger Games like SO many of us, you should definitely check out the fabulous giveaway that's happening at 5 Minutes for Mom-- a special limited edition ipod Touch with a Mockingjay emblem on the back!!  You want to visit Jennifer's post, An Incredible Mockingjay Ipod Touch Giveaway to enter.

And as always, we'd love to hear what you're reading this month!  Link up at 5 Minutes for Books' What's on Your Nightstand? post!

If you're so inclined, you can check out my reviews from the past few weeks:

* The Case of the Crooked Carnival -- a really cute selection from the Doyle & Fossey, Science Detectives Series.  JAM approved!

* Children's Classics Award Winners: August -- come and see what award winning kids books we're talking about this month.

* Fragile -- a heavy and mysterious novel about family bonds and secrets.

* The Opposite of Me -- a light and fun read about twin sisters who seemingly have nothing common.

* Jack Blank and the Imagine Nation -- the first book of a new series that I fell in love with!!

Back to hanging with Katniss,

  1. The Slippery Book sounds great.

And yes, I'm waiting too. As of 6am Mockingjay is "out for delivery." And FedEX DID come, but it was boring house refi docs for my husband.

UPS usually brings our amazon goodies -- waiting for our friend in brown. . . .

  2. Mockingjay, Mockingjay, Mockingjay! =)

Well, well. I did put a hold request on The Hunger Games. But I'm still in a line of people waiting to play catch up and read it! I will though! I purpose it.

  3. I haven't read or heard of any of those -- except I have seen Mockingjay on quite a few Nightstand posts today.

  4. There are some people's nightstands that I enjoy because their tastes are similar to mine--and some because they're different. I always enjoy reading yours because they push me out of my comfort zone (whether you're being pushed out of yours or not!)

  5. What is with this Hunger Games thing? :) I'm a young adult and I've never heard of them. Is it supposed to be the new Twilight or something? Hmm, I probably shouldn't have compared it to that; I'm sure there are some who would be angered by that.

I'll have to see if my library has the series.

  6. Okay, so until today I had never heard of Mockingjay. I take it I'm seriously behind - what's it all about?

  7. I just didn't have the patience to read Hunger Games & Catching Fire this time around...especially when Mockingjay arrived early! But I have a feeling I'll want to go back and re-read the whole trilogy before long.

  8. I guess I need to jump on the bandwagon. I haven't read any of the Hunger Games series!

  9. I thought Mockingjay was due out the 30th, but this very afternoon I saw it at Walmart of all places! Shelves and shelves of copies.

    Truly an eclectic listing!

  10. Thanks for your thoughts, Dawn. I haven't read Twilight either. This series sounds much more interesting! I just checked, and my library has The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. :) Once I get some other books out of the way I will definitely check them out!

  11. Mockingjay! Mockingjay!

The people who haven't heard of it must be living under a rock. ;)

My copy will arrive today, it was sent out for delivery at 8 this morning. :)

I'm looking forward to your review of Maybe This Time, it sounds really good. I haven't heard of the others but they all sound interesting.
