the kids are picking away- Christmas present edition!

It's the end of an era of sorts.  Okay, perhaps that's being a little dramatic, but over at 5 Minutes for Books, we're saying goodbye to some of our monthly carnivals.  Today marks the last Kids' Picks, although I'm pretty sure I'll still be regularly blogging about the books that Pudge, Red and JAM are enjoying!

During last weekend's visit with the grandparents, we celebrated an early Christmas, and of course, some books were under the tree.  Here are a couple of the presents that have been getting reading action over the last few days!

If we're starting it off with JAM, there will be no big revelation of an unknown title here.  His squeals were loud and exuberant when he opened both Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth and Rick Riordan's The Heroes of Olympus, Book One: The Lost HeroNo surprises here, huh?  He had already borrowed The Ugly Truth from the library, "settling for" the audio version when he couldn't find a copy of the book on the shelf, and ended up loving it!  He flew through the book in no time during the weekend, and he's a couple chapters into The Lost Hero, happily consuming more of one of his favorite authors.  Merry Christmas reading all right!

Now onto Red, who giggled with delight upon opening her booky presents, as well.  First up came Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique by by Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser.  This is one that she hadn't read before, and we read it together right away over the weekend.  All the fancy words are there and explained as usual, and the illustrations and overall girly-girly fun made Red one happy little reader.  This next one is technically not a "kid pick" since I suggested it and we haven't started reading it together just yet, but I'm confident that she'll adore it.  (It comes with a very, VERY strong recommendation from fellow book blogger Carrie!)  Tumtum & Nutmeg: Adventures Beyond Nutmouse Hall by Emily Bearn is sure to be just right for this little girl who is beginning to love longer stories (a great excuse to use her new bookmark from her grandmother!) and adores little animals.  Thanks for the suggestion Carrie!

And finally for Pudge's picks.  These two gifts were recognizable to him as soon as he opened them, since they feature two beloved characters from books we've read again and again.  Tomie dePaola's Merry Christmas Strega Nona has happily joined our supply of holiday books.  What's not to love about Strega Nona??  I'm so happy that all the kids love her as much as I do.  For more holiday fun, Pudge has been loving Llama Llama Holiday Drama by Anna Dewdney.  I love that these books remind parents what it's like to be a little kid, and Pudge loves the silly rhymes and adorable pictures.

So there you have it, my last official Kids' Picks, at least under this name.  If you have any last sharing you'd like to do, come on over to 5M4B and link up with your own!

Happy holiday reading,

  2. Kyle always LOVED using a bookmark when we were reading longer books too.

I just have to check out TumTum as well.

And Amanda will be reading Lost Hero on our travels. It's packed in the bag, and she's held off (reluctantly).
