wanna view some reviews... or win a signed book?

Here's my semi-regular roundup of my reviews over on 5 Minutes for Books, but this time around, I'm actually being timely enough that if you follow the very last link, you'll still be in time to enter a fantastic giveaway!

What I've been reading lately:

* I absolutely adored Who by Fire by Diana Spechler-- I was intrigued immediately and these characters will stay with me for a long time.

* I read it for my online book club a while ago, but I recently posted a review of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games, a book that I simply couldn't put down because of the heart-racing pace. It's a YA book, but I loved it and am still excited for the next installment due out this fall.

* Do you Shelfari? Yeah, I don't know if that is a verb quite yet, but I wrote a little essay extolling Shelfari's virtues in My Virtual Bookshelf.

* I read Doris Lessing's Alfred & Emily with a new found respect for those authors who can create fiction as well as write reflectively about the real events in their lives. This unique book is a combination of these two genres, and it was a compelling read.

* And finally, today's review begins on 5M4B, and then asks you to shift over to our 'Mother Site,' 5 Minutes for Mom where the full review is being featured! (Oh yeah baby, featured stuff!) Reading Everyone is Beautiful by Katherine Center was an exercise in shock and awe-- a writer has created a fictional character whose thoughts mirror mine like no other book character I've ever come in contact with before! For all you ladies out there, I think so many parts of this book will resonate with you, especially the moms of young children. If you want to win one of three signed copies of this book (YAY!), follow the link over to the full review and leave a comment praising my reviewing skills. Or, you could just say, Enter me! Either way.

  2. I read your review of Who by Fire. I really liked this book too and you did a good job reviewing it. I always enjoyed Lessing's non fiction, essays and things like African Laughter very much. I just wondered wether the story in Alfred & Emily might be boring, I know she's a really good writer. I use Shelfari too and really like the "read' and "currently reading" gadgets for my blog. I suppose I should read your essay, I might learn some other useful things about it.
