For this month, though, I'm being brave and listing a whopping six books here, with the complete intention of being able to call them all completed by the time we meet again for next month's nightstand.
- Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger- seriously, I'm going to start reading it THIS WEEK! My online book club's discussion opens on 2/15, so I wanted the reading to be fresh in my head. I swear to you that this is the last time you will see this book listed on my nightstand!
- Pieces of Someday by Jan Vallone- this is a memoir that I was sent from the publisher, who happens to be a friend of one my online book club friends. I'm about 50 pages in, and the author's story of trying to find her path in both career and family has me already engaged.
- Shanghai Girls by Lisa See- I'm waiting on this one from Bookswim, but I don't know much about it at all. I do know, though, that I greatly enjoyed this author's novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, so that's what I'm going on.
- The Help by Kathryn Stockett- I may possibly be the only book lover left who has not read this one, so I plan to rectify that this month. I expect that I will find it as incredible as everyone else!
- The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart - Yup, I haven't read this one yet, either. But JAM and I plan to both tackle it this month. I think we'll be reading it separately so it doesn't take too long, and also because of what you'll read next.
- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle- Since we just finished When You Reach Me, JAM and I are going to try this one as a read aloud next. I hope we can make sense of it together! I don't exactly remember reading it as a child, but I assume that I must have, having been an avid child reader in the early 80's, right?
On the reviews front, the list is short... yeah, what can I say? Life often gets in the way of reading and reviewing!
- Fiction: The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova- a dense novel that is a bit slow paced, but worthwhile for a entertaining read.
- Homemaking & Parenting: Making a Family Home by Shannon Honeybloom- a beautifully photographed and thoughtfully written guide to creating a home that keeps children's and family's many needs in mind.
- Self-Improvement: Your Name Here Guide to Life by Michael Rosenbaum- a cute little book full of humor and helpful reminders of what's important in life.
- Middle Grade fiction: The 39 Clues series- JAM helped me out with this review of one of his favorite series right now! I do believe the next book comes out in February, and he is one excited reader.
- Middle Grade fiction: The Wish Stealers by Tracy Trivas- A fun story about wishes granted... and stolen. The best part-- it's a giveaway, and it's still open! Five winners for this one- so get on over and leave a comment!

Happy reading,

I feel like some books end up on my Nightstand month after month as well! Funny.
ReplyDeleteAnd how I love being called "the wonderful Jennifer." Feel free to use it anytime you refer to me.
I was thinking it was YOU who had reviewed The Help. Oh bother. If you read it then I'LL feel all left out and like I need to read it too.
ReplyDeleteDuly noted on this "wonderful Jennifer" thing. ;D
Ahhh . . . I just finished The Help. Loved it. At least I'm not the last one ;). A Wrinkle in Time - classic. My sister gave me L'Engles' Marriage: A Two Part Invention soon after I married. It is excellent, marvelous, lovely. Non-fiction, obviously, totally different from her many other juvenile fiction books. I'm sure you are just dying for another book for the nightstand!
ReplyDeleteYou will love The Help. You will. Shanghai Girls is good, not Lisa See's best, though. Have you read Peony In Love by See? It's more in line with Snow Flower. Happy Reading!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read The Help yet, either, but it's on my list of books I MUST read this year. Also, I really liked The Mysterious Benedict Society. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteWonderful list! I keep seeing how wonderful When You Reach Me is. I guess I may have to read it!
ReplyDeleteThat last comment was from me (Baseballs and Bows). I am just realizing that I've been leaving comments with a "Profile Not Available". I guess I will be the mystery commenter.
ReplyDeleteShanghai Girls is on my list this month as well. Looks like you have a great list! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteGreat list. I haven't read "The Help" either, so I must add it to my next list. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteI re-read Madeline L'Engle's Time series every few years. I hope JAM loves "Wrinkle" - and be sure to check out the rest of the series if he does!
ReplyDeleteI have not read The Help either. It is on my TBR for the future. :)
ReplyDeleteNope, not the last one to read The Help. I have not read it yet. Read wonderful reviews for After Ever After, want to read it. Have a great reading month.
ReplyDeleteSee, there are lots of us who haven't read The Help.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny I should read your post and its comments just after I learned about the importance of perceived social norms. Turns out, there are quite a few that haven't read it--but we're all thinking that everyone else has, so we're all DYING to pick it up ;-)
Oh Mister Man is SO loving the 39 clues. We have the first four books, and he's been having a blast reading them!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED Catcher in the Rye. That was one of my favorite books in high school. But A Wrinkle in Time? I have to admit that even as an avid reader, I never read it. I vaguely remember starting it but not being able to finish it because it was so boring to me. I'll be interested to see what you think!
I read Catcher In the Rye my freshman year of college and I instantly fell in love with Salinger. I re-read Catcher at least once a year.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're not the only one who hasn't read The Help...it's on my TBR list!
You and I have TWO books the same on our nightstands. I'm reading The Help right after I finish Catcher--which will take you about 1 day, by the way, because you won't be able to put it down.
ReplyDeleteAlso, A Wrinkle in Time was my FAVORITE book for years and years and I even wrote to Madeleine L'Engle and she wrote me back. OH the joy.
