Oh, and as a result of becoming a Facebook fan of NPR, I'm seeing even more interesting stories, which is nice because I have to sometimes let the children hear something other than the voices on WAMU. So now the stories that I missed on the radio are coming at me online, and I'm just in bliss! Without further ado, here are this week's winners:
- From All Things Considered, I appreciated author Eric Weiner's piece, "In An Era Of Immediacy, Why Fear the E-Book?" I absolutely get what he's saying here-- technology is fabulous, and if I were a frequent traveler, I could definitely justify having an e-reader to take along lots of reading options. But for regular old reading, you'll never be able to convince me that anything is better than a paper book in my hands.
- Another All Things Considered goody, and this one caught my attention because of my new found interest in the King Henry VIII time period via the Showtime series The Tudors. "Alison Weir, Arguing the Case for Anne Boleyn" makes me think that this poor woman just might be one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented women in history!
- This one made me shake my head... again, more technology isn't always the answer. Seriously, just listen and see what you think-- "Tech encouraging cell phone use in cars" from Marketplace.
- "Screen time" is a common term in our household, and JAM knows to use the timer when he uses the computer or the Wii, and his limit is 30 minutes on school days. (Our limits are a little wider on the weekends... especially now in the winter... what can I say?) Those are the numbers that seem to work for us, and I have to say that I was pretty surprised by the numbers coming out of the recent media coverage about children's usage of TV, computers, gaming systems, etc, etc, yada, yada. This is a thought provoking discussion from Tell Me More about this topic, with a special focus on how the numbers compare across racial lines. "Study: Kids Fixated With Television, Internet and Texting."
- Okay, if the others are just too long to listen to, then this one, coming in at 28 seconds, is right up your alley. And it's a little amusing. "PetSmart Employee Was In The Doghouse" from Morning Edition.
- And finally, this one is most especially for my dear husband. I literally ran to the radio bookmark when I heard this one, because I knew that I needed him to hear this one, and I'm thinking that a lawn worthy of Jeter's fine form running across it will soon be high on someone's wish list. From All Things Considered, "Root For Home Team With MLB Stadium Grass Seed."
With gratitude to NPR,
