now posting regularly

Another week, another seven days in which regular blog posts have gone to the wayside.  This summer (which will go down in our family DIY history) has been a rough one, but the light is clearly shining bright at the end of the tunnel.  More on that later, but for now, let's see what joy NPR has brought to my (non-blogging) week.

  • "Judy Blume Showed Innocence Isn't 'Forever'"-- Somehow, I've never read Forever, but I've heard enough about it over the years to have appreciated this story from All Things Considered.  I did read Blume's Tiger Eyes and felt validated for my crazy tween emotions and thoughts.  I'm thinking that Forever should get on my reading list before Red grows up a little!
  • "Audience Picks: Top 100 Killer Thrillers"-- I'm not usually a big "thriller" reader, but the one and only YA book on this list, coming in at number 61, is one of my most favorite books ever.  8.24.10.  'Nuff said.
  • "Census Bureau Counts Pennies As Well As People"-- This Morning Edition piece is here just for my dear Bureau friend.  I mean really- this is a story that should be receiving more press than it did.  How often does a federal agency come to the conclusion of a project UNDER budget??
  • "'Bed Intruder' Meme: A Perfect Storm of Race, Music, Comedy And Celebrity"-- All Tech Considered has provided a thought-provoking discussion surrounding the local news clip in which a man addresses the man who allegedly attempted to rape his sister and the slew of parodies and clips that have shown up on the web in its wake.  I gotta say that I expected this story to be a lighthearted look at the controversy when I first clicked the link from Facebook, but I was surprised, and appreciative, for the thoughtful nature of the entire story.  This week's "if you're going to click just one link, click this one" highlight.
  • "Museum Of Bad Art: A Home For Forlorn Paintings"-- I painted a picture that totally would have been worthy of admission into MOBA, if my parents hadn't mysteriously "lost" it.  (Just kidding, Mom and Dad.  I know how much you loved my dog/cat picture.)  When I heard this Morning Edition story, I just knew I'd have to look it up online to actually see some of the pictures.  Yup, this is bad art.

Three cheers for NPR,

  1. I can't believe you never read "Forever"! That was probably the first book I ever read where teenagers had sex.

And I scanned through the list of thrillers. I've read a fair number of them (like, all of the Stephen King ones). I'm amused that the Stieg Larsson books are on there - seems a bit trend-happy, since those are such new books.

  2. I was just going to write exactly what the first poster said: I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU NEVER READ FOREVER!!! That book is a young girl's FIRST novel into womanhood! Katherine, the main character DOES IT!!!! And RALPH!!! Just please tell me, PROMISE me you'll read it. Although I really bet it won't be enticing, enthralling, WONDERFUL as it was for a girl who read it in the early '80s as a 13-yo. But please let me know if you read it! You really should, and you should post about it on Five Minutes for Books. Would LOVE a first-time perspective from an adult mom! THAT would make for an EXCELLENT POST!

    PS--great review of FRAGILE
