- "Pop Personae: Why Do Some Women Perform In Character?"-- Okay, I'll admit that I'm not even familiar with half of the artists mentioned in this article, and I'm not necessarily the biggest consumer of pop music, but I found this story from The Record, NPR's music news, to be an interesting commentary on the feelings that are conveyed and shared through music, especially the connections young people make to music and musicians.
- "Lung Problem Attributed To Growing Pea Plant"-- I heard this between-segments short piece on Morning Edition and knew this would be one that make the list. Really?? I'm pretty sure that 99% of people who heard this story immediately thought of the teasing they received from a grandparent/aunt/uncle about eating watermelon seeds! A little more info is included in this ABC News blog story.
- "Experiencing Teen Drama Overload? Blame Biology"-- Are you lucky enough to be parenting a child in the tween or teen years of his/her life? Lucky, lucky you. This Morning Edition piece caught my ear as soon as I heard it. I'm thinking this is a book that would be a helpful addition to my please-help-me-be-a-better-parent library.
- "'Choose Your Own Adventure' Gets An iMakeover"-- Not that I have an i-anything, but I found this Talk of the Nation story about the new versions of the CYOA books fun anyway. Recently, JAM borrowed a big stack of the *original* CYOA books from a friend of ours, and seeing him sit there flipping pages back and forth certainly brought back memories!
- "A 'Percy Jackson' Summer Camp Thrives In Brooklyn"-- This All Things Considered story came on last night while I was washing dishes and I immediately thought how much fun a certain ten-year-old in our family would have going to this camp. I haven't read the books, but JAM consumed them in a flash, and we just watched the movie a couple weeks ago. Yay for the folks who created this camp-- an emphasis on a beloved book, the never-out-of-fashion appeal of Greek mythology, and the description "relaxed, unregimented and definitely low-tech"-- something that I would LOVE to send any of my children off to.
Until next week,

Did you post that tween/teen story just for me? Ha ha. First -- looking at the picture of that blonde 13 year old girl who is only between 13 - 24 months older than my daughter. . . Very scary!!
ReplyDeleteBut biology -- yeah. I tell Terry that she can't help it.
This list from the middle school helped a lot: http://www.newtown.k12.ct.us/nms/page.php?pid=200
