now posting regularly

Whoa, another Wednesday is upon us, so it's time to look back at the NPR archives for the week. Here's what caught my attention:

  • "A (Shockingly) Short History Of 'Hello'"-- This is lighter fare than what I usually bookmark from NPR's offerings, but it was interesting when I read it on the Krulwich Wonders blog. Why do we say "hello" as a standard greeting? I can honestly say that was something that I never even thought to question!
  • "Woman swears off Internet for six months"-- From Marketplace is a story of a woman trying to go offline, completely cold turkey. Nope. I can tell you right now, that is not something that I'd survive.
  • "Parent Trap"-- I remember hearing this This American Life piece when it first aired in 2010, although apparently I didn't remember how the segment on Lucy the chimpanzee ended. Sad.
  • "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me"-- Okay, I try to catch this as often as I can, but I usually don't link up on here, because each week's episode is ALWAYS fabulous. But this week, I couldn't help myself-- you've simply got to listen to the "Not My Job" segment with John Leguizamo. Oh my, that guy is just too cool.
  • "Five Years Later, Justice Thomas Still Silent"-- I could seriously write an entire post about this All Things Considered story, because honestly-- this is outrageous. How does this man sit on the highest court of the land and get to just sit there day in and day out, saying nary a word. He doesn't ask any questions about the cases at hand. "On Tuesday, as always, he passed the argument session leaning back in his chair, sometimes closing his eyes.." Really?? I could never get away with that at a staff meeting, let alone while sitting as one of the MOST POWERFUL JUDGES IN THE WORLD. Sigh. "...this unspoken and sometimes openly spoken subtext that [Thomas is] an idiot so of course he's not talking." This quote made me shout at the radio-- I don't think he's an idiot, but he damn sure is the laziest judge I've ever heard of!!
  • "Oscar Buzz" -- Phew. Okay, onto much lighter fare. Today's Kojo Nnamdi Show focused and on the contender's for Best Picture, and although I have only seen a couple of the nominees, I'm hoping to tune in to the awards to find out who wins!

Happy NPR listening to you all,
