bus blogging, chapter three

Ah, the joys of working on a college campus. It's enough to make you wonder how the hell our country is going to be able to survive if these are the geniuses taking over.

Sigh.

Nah, it's not that bad, but I do spend time on a daily basis wondering how these adults got to the ripe old ages of 18 to 20-something without some basic lessons getting implanted in their brains:

  • It's not a good idea to walk into oncoming traffic.
  • One human being is not the center of the world.
  • When in college, one is, indeed, considered an adult.

I could devote an entire bullet-pointed list to pedestrian etiquette itself:
  • Seriously, it's not safe to walk in front of a bus traveling down the road. If it's already begun a turn and is halfway through an intersection, for the love of all that is holy, just wait your damn self at the curb until it passes.
  • When walking, it's generally considered good form to watch where you are going. Watching your smartphone/iWhatever should be secondary in your concerns.
  • If walking with a pal or a group in one directon, be conscious of pedestrians walking in the opposite direction. Be a decent human being and allow them some room to navigate on the sidewalk. Your conversation about your drunken Friday night pursuits can be paused for a fraction of a second until they pass.
  • Oh, and guess what? No one else cares about your drunken Friday night pursuits, so you can lower your voice now.
  • Just as with traffic, stick to your right, okay?

Sadly, even Red has commented on some of these behaviors that she has observed herself. She feels regret that some of these "college kids" didn't have anyone to teach them "how to be polite walkers."

Atta girl.

Leaving the college campus environment and heading back to the world of a thirty-something mom with three wacky charges is an interesting shift. Today was a teacher workshop day, so I'm traveling on the bus by my lonesome on my way to get the kids. I love them and I love that we still get to spend some time together each day as we commute, but I'm not going to lie. Sitting by myself on the bus ain't a bad way to make this shift today.

On the road again,
