simple pleasures

I took the day off today. Okay, that's kind of technically impossible, but I let go of my "gotta get stuff done" mentality for the day. Our Saturday was busy, and our house is an utter disaster, but it's just after 8:30 in the evening, 2/3 of the kids are snug as bugs in their beds, and hubby and I are going to put on blinders to the mess and watch a movie in a little while.

For as much as I write when I'm stressed out, or feeling like a failure in this grand parenting experiment that we call everyday life, I need to make it more of a habit to bloggily acknowledge when things are just good.

  • All of the kids had their last swim classes this morning, and they each met the skill goals at their respective levels. It was great to watch them, seeing the pride just beaming out of them, and even though we're going to take a break and not sign up for this next session, something tells me that they're each going to get a lot of great practice at the pool in just a few short months!
  • My bathing suit replacement came in the mail this week, so while Red was in her class, I decided to see if I could indeed still propel myself from one end of the lap lane to the other without sinking. It was tough, let me tell you, as I haven't been swimming laps for several months now, but it felt good to try again. I know that I'll never be anything even close to athletic, but I've got to keep reminding myself that I feel pretty good after keeping my heart rate up for a little while. (Remind me of that Monday morning when my alarm goes off at 5:30 am!)
  • Once we got home, the kids played in the beautiful sunshine (and mud), and I fully embraced my "day off" mentality. Hubby got the kids lunch, we read stories, and the younger ones went upstairs for naptime. I followed suit and took my own TWO HOUR NAP right there on the couch while hubby took in a must-see college basketball game. It was great all around.
  • Upon waking up, we left the disaster of a house to go do our part to stimulate the economy. Target, Noodles & Company, and Wegman's = an actual fun time! Miraculously, all three kids were mostly calm and well-behaved, which is a rare in-public-performance. It could have been in part because they each had some money burning holes in their pockets. Thanks to grandparent Valentine's Day cash and some cash earned by cleaning up those dastardly sweet gum tree spiky seed ball from the yard, they each were able to pick something at Target. I was surprised-- and so freaking pleased-- that everyone understood that they had a very modest amount of money to spend, and while it took a little while to figure out what they wanted and could afford to get, there were ZERO fits. None. Nada. And that's pretty significant for a little girl who is in LOVE with everything "My Little Pony" and only had $8.00 to spend. JAM and Pudge pooled their money to buy two to-be-jointly-owned toy sets, and we left Target with small trinkets and three very happy children.
  • While I've been to the new Wegman's once to eat dinner, I hadn't yet been through the entire store until tonight. Wowee zowee. The kids have gone with hubby to do shopping before, and they apparently have a deal that if they are cool during the whole time, they can each get a small treat at the billions-of-bins-of-candy-goodness section at the back of the store. Holy cow, I think I gained ten pounds just looking. After some gummy worms, chocolate covered pretzels, and starbursts/gum mix were measured out, we checked out. Since they just get a couple pieces, the cost is really quite minimal, but they still think it's a fabulous treat. Win-win. And, the added bonus? We walked through the seasonal/miscellaneous section before checking out, and they had a whole mess of random small toys and things, including a whole bunch of discontinued Playmobil mini-sets and other good sale items, so while I checked out and got the kids back in the car, hubby did some shopping for future holiday gifts at bargain prices. Oh, and have you seen the built-in pull-down footstool in the restrooms so that little kids can reach the sinks?? As Red said, "I think the guy that made that must be really talented." Indeed. I heart Wegman's.
  • And now, we're getting ready to pop in my favorite Baz Lurhman visual-fest-- Romeo and Juliet. Since we watched Shutter Island with some friends last night, apparently this is a Leo DiCaprio weekend, as well. (Not too shabby.) While it feels so ridiculous to say that we saw this movie for the first time FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, I'm super excited because it's such an incredible version of my (stereotypical) Shakespeare favorite. I'm even going to turn off this little laptop/online crack as soon as we begin the grown-up portion of the evening. Yay!
All in all, a lovely Saturday. I'm even proud of myself for not freaking out (yet) about how much I need to get done tomorrow in prep for a kinda busy week. Consider this my bloggy version of stopping to smell the roses. And in my case, the roses smell like fun pool times, well-behaved and happy children, lazy napping, and adding more dollar signs to the credit card bill.

Life is good.

 Uncharacteristically positive,
