MTE reviews: Blue Man Group, full of surprises

The Blue Man Group blue, um, blew my mind last night. Truly. I expected a trio of oddly-hued men to bang on some pipes and make funny faces at each other. Kinda like this:

They did a fair share of that, and it was cool.

But then there were all these other parts that I just had no idea to expect.

Pounding on drums, splashing colored liquid flying with each strike.

And skits! I had no idea there would be hilarious and surprising skits, some involving just the Blue Men and their crew, and other times calling upon audience "volunteers."

(pic not from our show, but from my favorite skit of the night!)

Seriously, I had no idea what to expect. Unlike my hubby, I hadn't seen any YouTube clips, of which there are apparently A TON. So I went into this show with a virtual clean slate. I loved the pop culture jokes, the blend of technology with a huge WOW factor, and the pure talent the three Blue Men had in conveying fabulous humor with nary a spoken word. This guy was one of our trio, and I adored his facial expressions:

For someone who has absolutely zero experience with "performance art," I have to admit to being a little unsure of how I was going to react to the Blue Man Group's overall show, but I left the Warner Theatre with a gigantic smile on my face and one ridiculously happy husband. I even had a little guilt that I didn't bring along ten-year-old JAM who seriously would have been all over this show. I know he would have had a grand time, but I'm also happy to have had the opportunity to go on a date with my spouse, as well!

If you're in the Washington, DC area, and you've ever entertained the idea of going to see a Blue Man Group show, be sure to take advantage of their current short run of shows. From now until 4/3, they'll be appearing in evening shows Wednesday-Sunday, as well as matinee performances over the weekends. If you're interested in buying tickets, head to the Warner Theatre's calendar page and don't forget to enter the code BLISSFUL to receive a $5 discount off the Thursday, March 24th or Sunday, March 27th shows!

**Disclosure: I was provided two complimentary tickets for the Wednesday, 3/23, show, but I was not instructed on what to write in response. All awed commentary and acclaim were authentically earned by one helluva show!

Still laughing and replaying rock concert movements in my head,
